Yoga and Food

There is an ayurvedic proverb that says: “When diet is wrong, medicine is of no use. When diet is correct, medicine is of no need.” The proverb gives a clear meaning and indicates the importance of food in our lives. Many people wonder if it is enough to just practice yoga to have a perfect body or they really have to regulate their food habit – the answer is obviously yes. Yoga, when combined with a yogic diet, can do wonders.

According to yogic diet, we should not eat spicy food, fried food, garlic, onion, tea, and coffee. These foods cause restlessness, hyperactivity, irritability, sleeplessness, and anger. It also suggests that we should not eat stale food, non-vegetarian food, and food that contains excessive sugar, oil, and fats. These foods make us sluggish or lethargic. It brings about disorientation, inertia, and confusion in our minds.
Not only the right kind of food matters, but there are some other factors that should be considered too:

Quantity: As a rule, we should fill our stomach 50% with food, 25% with water and remaining 25% should remain empty. If our stomach is overstuffed, the food will not digest properly. Overindulging puts strain on our abdominal system and we tend to become lethargic. This can lead to weight gain too. On the other hand, under eating will not give us the required nourishment.

Vegetarian: Yogic diet should be completely vegetarian. Animal proteins contain a high amount of uric acid and other toxins which contribute to many diseases. Nuts, fresh fruits, and vegetables, dairy products, and legumes are full of high-quality protein.

Timing: The role of timing is very important in the yogic diet. We should eat at regular intervals and at the same time every day. This keeps our entire body system healthy and going. Yogic dieticians don’t eat after 6 PM as it allows our body to digest the food before sleeping.

Fasting: The yogis also recommend fasting one day per week. It can be strict, or it can include water and fruits. The goal of fasting is to purify the mind and body.
